Computer will not log on

My friend has a dell with windows xp that was covered with spyware. I got him adaware se personal and he installed it and did a scan, but everytime he started a scan the computer would say it has to reboot. I told him to try booting into safe mode and then try it, and this seemed to work. He had 1600 critical objects that were removed and then he went to reboot his computer. whenever he reaches the logon screen and chooses his acount though, it says loading personal preferences, and then goes back to the logon screen. He tried logging onto the administrator acount and had the same result. Sometimes when he tries it it will just say logging out when he clicks on the account to log in. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Thank You

If the file really was successfully copied, you may be looking at a Windows reinstall.
