Had a quick question...let's say I had Windows ME and I wanted to install XP over it...if I decide to install full Version of XP, will it erase all the files on the hard-drive? how about if I had an upgrade version of XP...if I install XP using the upgrade version, will it leave all the files intact? thanks for all you help...just had a few doubts that I want to clear up...

Do you WANT to erase all the files or not? You can use either version of XP either way.
I'd personally wipe it and get a fresh start. |

Hypothetically speaking, I would want to leave the my personal files and program files on the drive...would performing an upgrade with a full version of XP wipe everything out?
Second question: Out of curiosity, performing an upgrade with an upgrade version of XP leaves on the files on the drive...correct? Thanks again glc. one meg short of a gig, jsanchez |

I think you can install XP, either full or upgrade, and still keep your old files. I did that with and XP install over W98. The files were not right on top, I had to do a search for them, but they were there.
I like the full versions of any OS rather than the upgrades. From what I have read it seems that they can cause more problems. Plus you won't have to save two disks with their licensing numbers, everytime you need to do a fresh install. I would either get the full version and install it and have it save files when it asks. Or better, save the files you want on a disk and do a clean install and then reinstall the files.

You could install XP over ME, but then you could run into problems. The best thing is a clean install. You will need to install all your programs again.
If your files are on another partition, you won't lose them. If you don't have different partitions, now it's a good opportunity to start with it. RJ

If XP works like 2K, you can upgrade (keeping all files and programs working) by installing within Windows. Put the CD in and it will ask you if you want to upgrade. I don't like doing this but it will work. Doesn't matter whether it's an upgrade or full CD, they both work the same in this scenario.
