FIRST CRASH ON MY NEW P4 – PLEASE HELP!!!
Today, I turned on my new P4 computer. I downloaded XP Service Pack #2. (My operating system is Windows XP Home, and I have the original license to use this program.) The wizard came up, and I followed the on-screen instructions. When it asked for a re-boot, I did so. When my P4 re-booted, it DID NOT GO TO THE DESKTOP (as usual). It did go into the Asus P4P800-E screen, then it went into a “DOS-type” screen which read as follows: “We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. …” There were a number of choices on this screen, so I chose: “last known good configuration”. Upon pressing, “enter” it went to the Microsoft Windows XP welcome screen. The blue horizontal bars swept across the screen in the small white box – but then stalled with two blue bars visible at the extreme right of the small white box. I tried the other choices on the “DOS-type - We apologize” screen – BUT IT STILL WOULD NOT TAKE ME TO MY DESKTOP. WHAT GIVES??? HOW CAN I GET MY P4 BACK TO NORMAL??? PLEASE HELP!!! |

It has nothing to do with the CPU. It's the software. SP2 installs have not been successful 100% of the time, and it looks like in your case, it wasn't.
See if you can boot in safe mode and go to the control panel > add/remove programs and uninstall SP2.
