Explorer is missing from the startup items
The OS is windows 98 SE.
I deleted some adware threats. I noticed that my computer seems to be running slower than before. I checked which programs are running the background using the control + alt + del command and I noticed that my explorer item is missing. The computer seems to working normal other than what I've mentioned. Could this be a problem? How do I fix it? |

Yours is an interesting case. Normally, if Explorer is stopped, your desktop won't be showing, since explorer is the Windows 9x GUI [Graphical User Interface].
Post what you see in the Task List box: I wonder if the task list itself is having trouble. Depending on how and what you deleted, some of Window's system files might be a bit disrupted. An over-the-top can help, but it might be a bit overkill for a situation like this, and it requires some attention to details when used (also requires either your Win98 CD, or the .cab files on the hard drive) http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846 Before trying an over-the-top, you'd want to run thorough antivirus/antispyware scans [just as you have recently], perhaps adding on online scanner, too - as an extra precaution. Backup critical data, too. You could also try System File Checker [you can start it by typing in "sfc" in the Start/Run box - without the quotes]. Since some of the file versions might be a bit older, it's best to go straight to Windows Update after using either System File Checker or completing an over-the-top [for Security Updates]. . . .
