It doesn't protect outgoing (I don't think). So if someone gets a virus with, lets say, a SMTP engine, it won't really help, unless you monitor traffic, until a spyware scan. If it does protect outgoing then I'm wrong, but I don't think it does.

It is for me. It doesn't protect outgoing as was mentioned but I don't worry about outgoing. I like to keep my startup and active running programs to a minimum. I use Spybot to take care of spware.

One piece of software is never "enough," whether it is the firewall in Windows or some third-party firewall software. Security needs to be overlapping. If you have an antivirus program, a secure browser, regularly scan for spyware with something like Spybot, and avoid dangerous activities like P2P filesharing and going to "questionable" websites, then adding the firewall into that mix is "enough."
Relying only on the Windows firewall, on the other hand, is not enough, but neither is relying only on a firewall like ZoneAlarm. Of course, having just a firewall, whether Windows or something else, is better than having absolutely nothing. |

XP seems to have a good firewall, but I use Zone Alarm.

It's good enough for me. I have a router and never had a software firewall other than the one built into XP. I have never had any problems.

The setup I like best is a hardware firewall [with NAT, SPI, and VPN] combined with a full-strength software firewall [one that can monitor and filter traffic both ways, and has flexible configuration abilities].
Since the XP Firewall doesn't [yet!] have the outgoing monitoring, it doesn't get my vote. |
