Unhappy ** MS Paint problem **

Hi All:

My MS Paint program quit letting me open jpeg's and gif's.

I tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling it, but that didn't work.

I reinstalled the filters ( Gifimp32.flt and Jpegim32.flt ) , but no luck.

In MS Paint Open files it shows ( Bitmap Files, GIF FILTER, JPEG FILTER, All Picture Files and All Files.

I also rerigistered these ( Filter_GIF_Export, Filter_GIF_Import, Filter_JPEG_Export, Filter_JPEG_Import ).

I ran SFC, but nothing found there.

I repaired Internet Explorer, no luck there either.

I tried installing a Win95 version of MS Paint, but that didn't work either.

All picture formats open just fine in Adobe Photoshop.

The error message that I get in MS Paint when trying to open a Gif or Jpeg is ...
"C:\My Documents\My Pictures\image.gif or image.ipg.
Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or it's format is not currently supported".

OS: Win98, IE: 5.5, Athlon 1.2GHz, 512Mb Ram.

Any help will be very much appreciated, and thanks ahead of time,

Bill Lane

Hi Bill & glc -

Last February (2003) when you had a similiar problem, you tried Irfan View then but didn't like it, so here's the link to the site Dan recommended with the Paint/Gif fix that worked last time. You'll be going to solution #6 on the link: http://www.geocities.com/one_human/advanced.html

Also - last time you this happened, you had to use his filters for the fix to work. [Ah, archives are a wonderful thing - especially since my memory is shot most of the time these days!]

Thanks glc & GaryRouth:

Well I already had all the information from http://www.geocities.com/one_human/advanced.html , and I took it step by step.

I was about to give up when I noticed in the Registry, Path, Data that the Gifimp32.flt, Jpegim32.flt was all in caps ( GIFIMP32.FLT & JPEGIM32.FLT ) in both Import and Export, so I changed them to match the files.

And everything works just fine now.

What caused them to get changed to caps anyway?

Thanks again,

Bill Lane
