Failure to recover appended backup
On a windows 98 system I had done a backup of about 1 Gig using the windows backup utility. I then added more files for backing up, choosing to only backup the changed files. When I tried to restore the backup, only the changed files were visible. All the folders for the previous files are now empty. The backup file has however still remained the same as if the 'lost' files are still present. Is there any way of recovering the previous files. Any help will be much appreciated.
PS; If this was answered before, please provide a link. Thanks |

When you did your "appended" version, did you use a different tape, or the same set of tapes? [I'm assuming you used tapes, since I don't remember Win98 Backup being able to store to CDs, and 1gb of floppies is out of the question].
If I recall, Win98 Backup saves in the ".qic" format, and writes the directory to the first media used (the first tape, or the first floppy) of the set. I'm not sure that Win98 Backup would assume anything - such as knowing to add to the existing directory, and append the files to the end of the existing file set. --> So now my question is = when you ran the "appended" backup, did it immediately ask for the last tape from the previous backup set, or did it start with the first? If you only needed to use one high-density tape, then this won't apply, and the question is instead - did you use the same or a different tape. I won't be able to check things on a Win98 machine until later - I'll look to see if Backup knows to append to the directory of an existing tape, or if it requires adding a new tape for each append. . . .
