coincidence or threat?
I was downloading a file, at the same time as doing a disk defrag... On hindsight probably not that surprising that there were issues!
My PC froze and on re-boot blue screened saying inaccessible boot device.Trying to repair the OS (Win2K SP4) it said that there was no instance of Win2K installed. The C: drive could not be explored in DOS saying unrecognisable File Structure. I put this down to my idiocy and re-built the PC. Just got in to work though and my colleague had exactly the same issue when he put in a RAID card! Again not recognising the file structure, Windows (XP) unable to find the OS to repair, not being able to see the drive in DOS etc..... Makes me think that it may not be just me killing my PC it may be something else? Anyone any thoughts? |

I think I know the problem.
Trying to download files while Windows is moving bits and pieces around is a sure recipe for trouble, you're right there, but what happened to your friend is another problem. I don't mean to be insulting but did he read the info that came with the card? XP is pretty damn fussy about what goes where, when, and the drivers for RAID cards are installed before the rest of the OS is. If he just stuck in the card and thought he was good to go he now knows otherwise.

When you install a RAID card on a system that already has a hard drive with a working OS, you have to put it in with NO drives attached, install the drivers in Windows, then you can shut down and put drives on it.

ooo, you should have read my post first. i had almost the same problem. all you had to do was check for errors from scandisk/chkdsk then write/repair the boot sector.
