Can't delete folder, strange error message

I get an error message when i try to delete a folder that was created by a freeware program for my handheld computer. I uninstalled the application, but its folder remained. The message is
cannot delete file : cannot read from source file or disk.

i tried deleting in safe mode, a few tools that i found on majorgeeks, but nothing helps. I noticed i can even create a second folder with the same name next to it. When i delete it, only the one i created actually gets deleted.

Does anyone have any idea how i could fix this? I ve seen errors when trying to delete folders before, but always about the folder being in use.

I just tried to run chkdsk /f from safe mode (i hadn't tried it before, no) . It gives a message

Chkdsk.exe cannot run because this volume is in use by another process, chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first
ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID
would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n)

Can i just dismount it and let it run?

If it's not your OS drive, yep.

I am afraid that it is my OS drive. Is there an other way to do this?

The folder is on a different partition than my OS, pretty much all my programs are installed there .
Now i was wondering, can i copy everything on this partition (except the folder) to an other partition , format it, and copy everything back? Will all my programs still work? or can this cause problems in my registry or so? I think formatting should get this folder away.

chkdsk x: /f

Where x: is the drive letter where this folder is. If you try to chkdsk /f the OS partition, it's going to tell you that you have to reboot - so if all it's doing is asking to dismount, let it, as long as you have all your apps closed and no files open.

chkdsk ran properly this time, everything seems to be normal, no bad clusters or anything. But the folder is still there and it still gives the same error when i try to delete it. Would it help if i tried formatting this partition like i said in the above post? Or is there any other way i might be able to solve this?

This seems a similar problem. Read it all and if you have any questions, ask them here... And yes, formatting would certainly help, but the link I provided might be faster/less dangerous.

It's solved . Thanks for your help Glc and Mesaeus.

I let checkdisk run again, but it didnt come up with any errors, and the folder was still undeletable. a little further on the page from the link you provided someone said to use rd x:\folder \s , and this did the trick, the folder is gone.

Formatting would indeed have cost me a lot more work and time.
