Angry Fire Windows Update wierdness

I have windows update set for "notify me, do not auto update or install."

but it has never notified me. today is 10/8/04, and i have yet to hear anything about SP2 from them.
Now I get windows automatically downloading (i see in system tray).
Why?

Windows pisses me off

When it's done downloading, it will notify you and ask if you want to install.

Lightbulb This is really strange.........

I have SP2 on my Sony VAIO laptop (P4, 2.8 gHz) and it is STILL trying to install the first of three updates when it was being shut down. The message on the screen says, "Installing Update 1 of 3.....", and then advises, "Do not turn of or unplug your computer - It will turn off automatically." These messages appear alternately and have been doing so for the past six hours.

I wondered if I shut it off to reboot it, would it really cause any problems?

It was scanned with AVG and AdAware recently, so there should be no virus files or spyware causing problems (I hope).

I went ahead and did the reboot and everything seemes to work OK. I then (manually) did the Windows Updates, which also loaded OK.

This may just be another glitch from Microsoft...... if everything remains OK after a few days, then it will probably be OK, despite the re-boot.
