Partitioning with Windows 2000 server?
I need to partition a pc that has Windows 2000 Server installed on it. I usually use partition magic, which is very useful, but it does not work on Server. It recommends Volume Manager, but I need an option that costs nothing. I have an unallocated space which I need to assign to the C drive. Can anyone detail how to do this. Can I use FDisk, and how. I do not want to mess up the network so instructions would be great.

Fdisk would destroy any info on the partition so it is not an option.
The cheapest way I know is put the disk in a workstation and partition it there with PM. Or...buy Acronis Disk Director (www.acronis.com), it will allow you to partition servers and doesn't cost an arm and a leg (under a $100). Always remember to back up before doing any operation of this type, I have seen a lot of data go down in flames from such an operation. |

Can't you use Disk Management to make unallocated space into a partition? You can at least make the space usable, but you can't merge it with an existing partition.

And...using disk management on an existing partition will destroy all of the data, so as glc points out it can be done, but only on non-allocated space.

Thanks for the advice fellows. You can use Disk Management to turn the unallocated space into a partition but I want to assisgn the space to the c drive without losing data (basically increase the size of the c drive to encompass the unallocated space) and you cant do that with Disk Management. I will probably put the drive in another pc and use Partition Magic, that seems to be the best option at the moment. Thanks a lot.
