SP2 has killed my laptop Help needed!!

Yesterday I installed SP2 on my ASUS laptop and things seemed to go OK except for the screen reolution. After the reboot to effect screen revolution changes I can't get it to work properly.

It switches on and then goes to the XP splash screen and then I get a blank black screen (dark not blue).

Could anyone advise me about what to do?

Thank you very much

Many thanks

Welcome to PCMech Beachs

Usually it's the F8 button. When the laptop is powering up, start tapping F8. It may not be that one, if it's not try F10, F2 or F12. Once you find the right one, select Safe Mode.

Unhappy msgina problem

Thanks for your help. I've now gone into safe mode but I have two dll problems with shlwapi.dll and msgina.dll

Even in safe mode, the laptop will only let me restart it because of the missing msgina.dll

Could you possibly tell me what to do next? I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you very much

Sandy

Looks like you aren't the only one.

Looks like a reinstall.

When you got to the screen where it lets you choose Safe Mode, did it say anything about Last Known Good Configuration towards the bottom of the screen? It it does, try that and see if it will load correctly. Do you have an XP disc? Or did Asus only give you a Recovery Disk?

I have an XP disk

Hi

When I try and go to last known good configuration, it goes straight to the dll errors. I tried all the different options on the page and it does the same thing.

I do have the original XP disk.

Thanks for your help.

Well...see if you can Repair Windows. It might not let you, but it's worth a shot. When you put in the disk it will load some files. When prompted hit Enter to continue, on the next screen it should you give you the option to delete or repair the current installation of Windows. Hit R. If that doesn't work then will you have to do a complete reinstall.

Can't get the windws CD to play

Hi,

Is there an alternative way to get the Windows CD to play? I seem to be stuck in an endless loop of the restarting and the computer doesn't let the windows cd play.

Thank you

Change the BIOS to boot from the CD. If need be you can download XP install floppies from the MS website. Using the recovery console you can perhaps fix the dll errors.

Good Luck

Go into the BIOS screen. I believe it's the Delete key, power up the laptop and begin tapping the Delete key. Once in the BIOS, go to the Boot Config screen and set the CD-Rom to be first in order. Save changes, and Exit. If it sees the disc it should say "Press any key to boot from CD...."

I don't recommend that you use the Recovery Console. It's much too complicated. Let everything load and when it asks if you want to continue or use the Recovery Console, continue as if you were going to re-install windows. In the next screen it will let you Repair or Delete the partition(s). Hit R and hopefully that will set your laptop straight.
