Corrupted Registry and Recovery Console Problem

I am experiencing a pretty serious problem and could use some help.

I have windows xp pro

AMD 2200XP, 80gig Maxtor IDE

Out of the blue today I tried to turn on my computer and received this message:

System32\Drivers\isapnp.sys

I tried a few times to boot into safe mode and a few restarts and no longer go that message but now receive this one:

\Windows\System32\Config\System

I tried to follow the microsoft solution to repair a corrupted registry using the Recover Console but found another problem.

I boot using the windows XP in the setup and its running through drivers its installing but before I get to the setup screen to press r for repair and then c for recover console it stops and I get a different message each time:

ntfs.sys corrupt

or

dmboot.sys problems...

or

setupdd.sys error code 7

or

sometimes it just hangs and stops

So I tried to solve my first problem of the corrupted reg by getting to the recovery console but I cant even get to that.

Anyone have and idea? Can I get to the recover console without going through the windows xp boot cd?

Well I just learned there was a power outage in the house today. My computer is behind a surge protector and was off at the time. Could this have done something?

Well there is an update.

After continually trying to get it to boot it now only comes to a screen which says

hal.dll is missing

I can now all of a suddenly get into the welcome screen and the recovery console.

So do I continue on with the method of repairing a corrupt reg or do I do something with this hal.dll?

UPDATE!

This is really getting odd now. After only getting this error when trying to boot hard drive:

\Windows\System32\Config\System

I then started getting the windows loading screen but was only met with blue screen of death or a restart.

Now I only get this when boot to hard drive:

hal.dll missing or corrupt

The next odd thing, since getting this error I can now finally fully load windows xp cd setup and I get to the welcome screen. However, after hitting enter for setup OR hitting r for repair I get the blue screen of death immediately. Sometimes get some nonsense about ntfs.sys

So I am really lost now. First I got the corrupt registry message and couldnt load the windows xp cd. Now it says hal.dll is gone. I can now get into the welcome screen in the windows xp cd but nly blue screen after that.

Since you might have a hardware issue, why not rule out the most common failures (memory & hard-drive) by booting with diagnostic cds/floppies into DOS and testing them? You can use MemTest86+ for the memory http://www.memtest.org And for the disk, go to the disk manufacturer's website & download the diagnostics (DataLifeGuard for Western Digitals, SeaTools for Seagates, PowerMax for Maxtors, etc.)

If you feel the hardware is OK, see if any of the repair methods in this MSKB article help http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314477

Seems odd that you'd blue screen when booting into recovery from the CD.
. . . Gary

[P.S. ...here's another link from the MSKB pointing to some extra hardware troubleshooting steps you can try (they apply to systems with a mature installation as well as fresh installations) http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;330181]

Gary, the second KB link you posted isn't working.

Fool818, have you tried the suggestions that Gary gave you?

The 2nd MSKB article can be reached by searching for article 330181. Sometimes the copy and paste from MSKB articles doesn't work.

Just for curiosity, I'll try pasting it again: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;330181

edit: so far tonight the link is still working
