Windows XP doesn't work with monitor [interesting]

This is a rather intreresting problem I ran across that I thought might be of value to others.

I got a KDS monitor about 3 1/2 years ago that has worked fine, at least with computers running Windows 98.

I found in two cases the monitor didn't work with computers running Win XP. The monitor would indicate there was no signal once Win XP loaded. I thought it was a problem with XP not detecting the monitor, and shutting off video output. Actually, the cause was a little more interesting.

The most recent problem was a new computer I got. I would watch Win XP start to load, then the screen would go blank. With no monitor, I couldn't see what was going on...or even try safe mode. Finally, I learned of the F8 [hold on start] key, which let me start XP in low VGA mode. That worked.

It turned out the monitor was the issue. Without its drivers, it would only display resolutions at 60 Hz. Evidently Win XP runs a faster refresh rate for video out.

So Win XP was sending out video, but my monitor couldn't take the refresh rate becuase the drivers weren't installed....but I couldn't install the drivers, because I couldn't see the display. Hmmmm... just remember the F8 key in these cases.

It could be that the monitor can't handle the resolution you have your set at. It could be that the highest supported resolution is either 800x600, or 1024x768.

What exact model is this KDS?

Airmack - KDS monitors are not "crap". You would be surprised how many monitor "manufacturers" actually use KDS as their OEM.

IT is a KDS Visual Sensations monitor. They tend to be a good all around monitor.

Here is the deal, I used this monitor at 1024 x 768 @ 72Hz [and more] with other computers. It seemed to have no problem with 70Hz + resolutions.

Yet on my current computer, with XP, it won't allow over 60 Hz at 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768.

However, I *think* I might have found a solution. I found an Intel BIOS CD with the emergency start disk and Win XP disk that the store gave me. Apparently, this still needs to be installed. It likely has more than a generic default video driver.

Still, it is kind of strange that Win XP starts out with anything over 800 x 600 at 60 Hz, if the proper BIOS video wasn't looaded. On my last computer the default start [Win 98] was 640 x480, which made sense. Then once I loaded the BIOS video drivers, I could select between many rates.

I have run xp with many differant monitors, and differant brands and have yet to find one that don't work at all as your stateing.
without the proper drivers for the video card, it will default to a standard vga and will work with any monitor.

I heard what you're saying, I worked for a company that made computer video acessories, I was often testing computers, and never ran across a computer - monitor that didn't work togather. That is why I posted this, it is pretty unusual.

All I can say, is I know of two computer, both with XP, that wouldn't work with this monitor on install XP install.

In fact, the first time was a few years ago, when this monitor was brand new. Shortly therefore I bought an XP machine. Just like this time the video dropped out as XP loaded. So I took the XP machine back and got a custom built maching with Win 98. At the time there were a lot of people finding Win XP didn't work with their hardwr.... so I didn't think much.

I don't know, all I can say is when I manually set it to 800 x 600 @ 60Hz I got an image. And I could get an image at 640 x 480 @ 60 Hz, so I don't know what XP started out with....

I belive the standard vga is 640-480 and is in all video cards as a default, xp will use the default.
