Running XP and not turning off computer?

I heard people say with XP they just leave their computer on, or in stand by or hibernt, for weeks at a time. [I have heard the same with OS X also.]

I've heard a couple of times that with unix [OS X] and Windows XP it is actually now better to leave them running - you're more likely to have trouble these days booting and starting the computer then just leaving them on.

Any comments or ideas on this? I still shut down at the end of the day.

If there's a problem, you're going to find it sooner or later...LEaving it on isn't going to change that. I turn mine off when it won't be used for a few hours. Don't want some 8 dollar fan quitting on me and destroying the pc.

I can agree with that. Although I think in hibrnt so little power is used to hold the memory, the fan stays off?

Just seems I hear alot of people mentioning not turning off their computer. Maybe if you have a lot on your computer.... and boot time is a couple of minutes.

Hibernate doesnt use any power at all...standby does. Hibernate copies everything from the memory and stores it on the hard disk.

If you do not have a UPS, I'd shut it down at night. Start it up in the morning when you want to use it, but leave it on all day till you know you are done with it. I have a Win2K box here on a UPS, and I leave it up 24/7, but reboot it about every 2 weeks - when it starts to get sluggish. My fans last for years. I have Asus Probe running - if the CPU fan quits or the system overheats, it sets off an audio alarm.
