Will Installation of XP Home Replacing Windows 2000 Millenium Cause Problems
I have Windows Millenium on a computer and want to replace it with XP Home. Will this change cause me any problems with existing drivers?

Do you now have Windows 2000 or Windows ME (Millenium)? They are two different operating systems.

it really don't matter which one you have, xp will upgrade both systems and no there should not be any problems at all, in fact it should run better.

I would start fresh
START FRESH!!! just save your favorites somewhere online or on a disk. Perhaps invest in that 2nd harddrive now and move any relevant information to it. |

Yeah, I would start fresh, reformat and re-install. I can tell you, it is a pain, but in the long run, the best to do.
I remember being on a forum where a lot of people were having trouble with XP while others found it ran fine. So we had a "survey". It turned out that almost all the people having trouble with XP had just run the XP install over their existing Windows system. All the people who loved XP, becuase it was "flawless" had done clean installs Just make darn sure you save the important files you don't see [email, email addresses, ect] before you re-format the drive. A second HD is a good idea, just copy your HD over to it. [I should have done that]. |

Actually, if you have Windows 2000 already, you *probably* could get away with just Installing Win XP over/with the existing system.
Most of the problems I heard of invovled people trying to go from Window 9x or Windows ME without doing a clean install of XP. |

Win2k to xp pro seems to work ok. Trying to update a win9x system to xp often leads to problems. Some apps install os specific files to the windows folder or /system32 folder. When the os is upgraded [from win9x to xp] those apps MAY need to be reinstalled.

Microsoft does NOT recommend upgrading ME to XP, as others have said, a fresh install would be best.

If you have the XP cd or you can borrow one, there is a compatibilty wizard on the cd which will check your hardware and software for known conflicts before you install XP. The utilty used to be available as a standalone from microsoft, but I have just done a search of the microsoft site using the filename and it appears to have been withdrawn.
