Can not update XP Pro to sp2

I have been trying to install SP2 on my laptop. I have the sp2 upgrade cd, and it extracts the files, but it never launches the installer. So I then tried to install it in safe mode, and it launched the actual installer that time, but about 3/4 through installing the new files it quits and says I do not have permission... even though I am on an admin account. I can not get it to show up on windowsupdate.microsoft.com either that sp2 is avilable for me to download and update to. Suggestions???

Also, If I have a windows xp Pro serial, will that serial work with a different xp pro disk, but on the same computer that I have a serial for? Or do i have to have the xp disk that came with my computer, or can i use another xp disk but my actual serial?

Thanks,
Ryan

You need to use the COA that came with the computer. On the laptop, it probably came with a recover type disc and the COA may work only with that recovery disc.

COA = certificate of authenticity.

To answer your question - an XP CD will work with any serial number that you've got, the assumption here is that you have legal serial numbers for the various CDs. And you arent using an OEM's CD (for example, using a Dell provided XP CD might not work).

Send a message via AIM to kingoftowns
actually the serial number has to match the type of xp disc you have
example: if you have a retail serial number you have to have a retail copy of winxp if you have an oem copy of winxp and a retail serial number it wont work

if you are using the coa on the bottom of the laptop you have to be using an oem copy of winxp
