Question Outlook Express - transferring to Win 2000 Professional

Hi All

Currently all my email information is on Windows 98SE within Outlook Express. This has the traditional Application Data holding the files.

Now I currently have a second disk with Windows 2000 Professional installed on the same computer.

It has Outlook Express but with no information in it at present.

Is there a way in which the Windows 98SE data with Application Data can be satisfactorily transferred to Windows 2000 Professional so that I can view all OK and continue without loss of data.

I need to know this fast if possible please, because SMART warning on the system has told me that my BOOT disk which is Win 98SE is about to fail. So I want to get that information carried across immediately.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Use the import function, import from Outlook Express, and then choose from a store directory, and browse to the folder with the .dbx files. To import the address book, find the .wab file.

Note that if the boot disk fails, you will not be able to just switch drives and boot to Win2K - the boot loader is on the existing boot drive if you are presently using a dual boot.

Very helpful indeed and speedy. Many many thanks. Oh by the way glc - is it a similar exercise to bring across FAVORITES to the Windows 2000 Professional Internet Explorer please.

Once again - cheers.

Favorites are even easier - just copy the contents of the Favorites folder from one to the other, no import/export needed.

Man, I have had more problems in the past doing email transfers. When I tranferred form Outlook 4 to Outlook 5 I tired the import function, and it didn't work. I tried moving the inbox, sent files manually, didn't work. I followed the instructions on the Microsft site... didn't work. It wasn't until a person on another forum told me that the Microsoft instructions left out an important step that I got it to work.

And now I am just trying to move inbox and sent files from Outlook 5 to Outlook 5. In one case I to it to work by manually cutting and pasting the files, and it worked, for the inbox files, but none of the others. I tried importing, didn't work.

If anyone knows the way to make this work, let me know.

You have to import from a store directory and go find the .dbx files.

I got it to work. I had save my email files to a USB Flash Memory Pen, and I tried to import from there. I finally realized the import didn't reconize the file path, or maybe the final folder name.

However, since my dual boot install left me with just C: drive and both Window 98SE and Windows 2000 on it, I realized I could just import from Outlook Express on the Windows 98SE side. Worked like a charm. I now have all my email on the Windows 2000 side. In fact I've got it all fully running over here.
