xp keeps rebooting even in safe mode
Got an issue with an Hp with xp that keeps rebooting even in safe mode. As soon as it gets to the welcome screen it reboots itself. Went into safe and it does the same thing and even after setting it to last known config... Help

Have you turned off the "automatically restart after error feature?" This will allow a blue screen with an error code and give us some clue as to the cause of the reboot.

Might be a power supply issue. Did you install any new hardware lately?

Does that HP have on-board video or does it have a video card? If it has a video card, try swapping in another to test with.
You might also try swapping out the RAM. A computer will randomly reboot if the power supply can't handle the power load. It can also reboot if the video card is faulty. And faulty RAM can also cause rebooting. My guess is the video card might be causing this. Cricket

You may have corrupted system files....
An HP system with WinXP Pro had a similar problem at my workplace. I ran chkdsk multiple times from the recovery/xp installation disk. Every time that I ran the program, errors were found on the hard drive. I finally had to do a reinstall to get the computer to start up. Bottom line, I would run chkdsk from the recovery disk. After the recovery disk has loaded, go to the recovery console. When the recovery console has finished, type chkdsk c: /R at the command prompt. I believe you will be prompted with a message that says windows needs to reboot. You should be given an option to run the chkdsk program during the startup and you should say yes to this. After chkdsk runs, it should display a report of what was found. Note the errors if there are any. If XP reboots, like it is already doing, repeat the recovery disk and chkdsk procedure again. If errors are found again, then you probably need to reinstall. Last edited by GreatBaldOne; 10-22-2004 at 11:29 PM. |
