Keyboard Error causes total lock-out

I have an old computer in my room, which I rarely, if ever use. I went to try to install Mandrake on it today, and I got a keyboard error at boot up.

Basically the keyboard isn't working at all. None of the lights on it are lighting up, and the computer is not recognizing any commands from it.

So the screen comes up, and says there is a keyboard error. Ironically, all of the options are keyboard functions, and obviously I can't select any of them.

So what is wrong with my keyboard (I have already made sure it is plugged into the correct spot), and can I get around this error screen?

It turns out the motherboard was a bit loose, so I had to hold onto some of the plugs near the keyboard one, so the motherboard wouldn't move around. Sorry to bother you guys.

Still an interesting dilemma.

Glad you found the problem.

Next time you have the computer shut down, power off, and unplugged - you might want to open up the case and check things out inside. If it's been stored for a while, you might have a fair amount of dust you can blow out, and you can make sure no loose screws are lying about, which might short something if they shift. It the motherboard is held in by plastic standoffs, you might be able to tighten up by pushing the motherboard farther into the slot they slip into (it looks a little like a keyhole, you tighten by going to the narrower end). If the motherboard is held in by brass screws, see if any have worked loose, and tighten as needed.

The keyboard connector itself might be a little fragile, if it's bent back, be careful with it when moving it forward (on some boards it's not very sturdy).

Have fun with Mandrake, I've enjoyed Red Hat and Caldera - heard lots of good things about Mandrake, but never found enough time to try it.
