Exclamation Win 2K - Missing config.sys file

I am at my wit's end with this problem HELP!!

My laptop will somehow NOT boot up. It was operating fine before an extended visit to the hospital. Upon my return, when I try to start up the laptop, I get the error message: cannot find config.sys file.

I don't have the Win 2K boot CD's as the laptop was a "hand me down" from my brother (and he can't seem to find them either.)

What can I do to get this laptop up-and-running again? Any and all assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!

Make a boot disk from bootdisk.com and boot into a DOS prompt. From there just create a blank file called "config.sys" in the root directory. Win2K should then boot up.

Wink Mea Culpa !

I made a mistake when I made my original post .... the actual file is in the config subdirectory and W2K is looking for a file called system.alt. Do your instructions still apply?

Thanks so much for all of your assistance!

Win2k & XT "kind of" use the config.nt

Coping the file will be difficult if your using NTFS file system.

Right EzyStvy, make sure you get a disk that can write to ntfs partitions.

BUT, you have a different case. What is the exact error message you receive, then we can all guide you in the right direction.
