the screen never turns gray ->

What color do you want it to be? Or are you saying that the pc never shuts off?

Try Start Menu > Shut Down (but don't click on the buttons after that). It's that fade effect going from color to back and white.

Click shut down, then wait a bit and then it will start fading from color to B&W

It has nothing to do with the menu fade effect you guys are thinking of.

The fade to B&W occurs before you finalize your shutdown/restart/suspend/logoff selection. It occurs both in classic and regular XP themes.

I didn't mean the menu fade effect. I was more or less trying to, if he did change any settings like that, maybe if someone mentiones the name he will remember.

I didn't find any display settings to change it, nor did I locate any registry tweaks for it.
