Computer freezes xp

My computer freezes every time it's idle for more than about 15min. I don't really know what to do or what causes it. The computer is a self built p4 2.4ghz with windows xp.

You running a screen saver? Try turning that off, see if that does it.

Then you might check the low power squence it goes into.

How's your case cooling? Got any case fans installed?

What size is the case?

Have you scanned for viruses, spyware/malware and trojans yet?

I had one of my machines showing the exact same symptoms. I cant say if this is your problem, but mine started with a minor short from the motherboard to the case and eventualy wound up with a fried northbridge chip. Do an out of case rebuild and see if the problem persists. Have you made any changes recently like new cards or cables, maybe a new power supply. Anything that could be hardware related.

I have had a screen saver go bad before also. I would start with this and the power saving options just to make sure they are not interfering.

I turned off all the screensaver and powersaving things yesterday and it didn't help. My case has 8 fans I think and the side has been off for a week I think if that matters.

Are there any scheduled events that may be trying to kick in after a idle period?

If its cool (and sounds like it should be) and the power saving options are disabled then I'm guessing applications.

Before leaving it alone for 15 min the next time, shut off all things that are not needed to make it run. This would be my next step in a process of elimination.

I don't know if this is accurate, but I heard you should keep your case closed, it is designed to circulate air that way.

The only other think I could think of, is have the process screen running, and try to catch any new processes that start right before it locks on you.

I just turned off everything that was scheduled to run in idle and it hasn't frozen yet. Makes since the program that was running was installed just recently.
Thanks all
