XP fonts are gibberish! fixed it then back????

Dear Techs,
I helped a friend today who had gibbersih with all Windows fonts, the last week after a download of a software off the internet, Adkiller??, the short version of how I got here, did a clean up and then found the restore point for the XP Home Edition, all was well, I put in Ad-Aware and found 600+ malware and spyware. Also did Spybot, when that found more spyware itsaid to reboot and run again to remove the last vestiges of what the first scan could not remove. When I rebooted, to my horror the gibbersih came back. I could not find a restore point that could restore the correct fonts. I am very fustrated. I tried safe mode and everything that I could think of - is there something that can be done, I went around the Start menu my memory since I could not read the Ascii ( I think) mess. anyone with any help? thanks so much.
Bob
