.link problem

Just recently I turned on my computer and nothing seemed to work anymore. All of my desktop icons had been replaced with generic windows icons and none of my programs would open. I received an error message saying that every program’s .link file was missing and windows needed to know what program created it. I could still access windows explorer, but none of my programs would open.

if not a virus, probably a registry problem, try some tool to repair it and if not, well maybe you needed a clean install after all

If it's XP, boot to safe mode and try a system restore.

I have tried to open system restore and even that gives the same error “Missing .link for this program”. I have finally given up and reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP, it was due for it anyway. Thanks for the responses everyone.
