Angry "Folder Tasks" on desktop has taken over!!!

I was cleaning up my desktop and (have the XP SP installed) I don't know what I did but the desktop suddenly displayed a very large box on the left side of my desktop a full 1/3 of the screen (it is titled "Folder Tasks and it asks for
Make a new Folder
then
Other Places
My Documents, etc and then
Details (Desktop)
and I cannot get rid of it and have tried everything that I can think of, does anyone have an answer. I even removed the XP SP and I then tried Restore Point and they are all gone??!!!!! UUUGGGGHHHHHHH

Do thorough virus and spyware scans, then reboot and immediately run HijackThis and save/post the log. Check the sticky thread in the Security forum for guidance.

What we want to see is the list of running processes and startup items - and this is the easiest way to see them all in one place. The fix will probably be a simple removal of a registry item.

Good grief - you have a ton of stuff running on that thing, including some questionable stuff.

I don't see anything that I know would cause this exact issue though. The best way to approach this is use msconfig and start disabling startup items till you figure out which one is causing it.

A new disaster!
Went inot the msconfig and saw various things and tried want you wrote. When I rebooted I realized that the Folders Task thing on the side comes up from the Start button and is the same width and think that is where the change took place. So I go into properties for the Start button and see that maybe I could try changes there. I unmarked Always keep on top and then I promptly lost my entire Start bar, clock everthing, I tried to see if I could restore and cnnot get the cursor to bring it back. Help!
Also to my horror, I went to do a Restore Point and they all GONE?? What happened?
This has all happened after I had the XP Service Pack downloaded. AARRGGGG.

& you can get the start bar back by using your windows key & going back into the taskbar properties.

good luck!

The easiest way to fix the problem is to go to Kelly's Korner, scroll down to line 15, click on "Remove Common Tasks from Desktop" to download the reg file. Once downloaded, double click on it and click "Yes" when it asks. That should do it.

Thanks, I got my Task Bar back by hitting my shortcut to windows Explorer and for a few seconds the Start button came up and I was able to quickly get to the properties and it was back. thanks for your help with this mess. the Tasks Folder thing is still there and I think that it is actually a shortcut which was conceived on my computer by the devil!!!! I am going to see if I can get rid of it through the desktop Clean up program!
