I installed a program (don't know which one - imediately uninstalled) that was suppose to show me duplicate files on my system. after installing the software, I rebooted and I only had my system font available. everything was in symbol font or system font making it very difficult to read. I copied duplicate fonts back into my font folder and I can operate again. however, every time I reboot, all fonts are lost again. I run Win XP and have all updates in place. what file was removed that is causing my fonts to be lost on reboot?

I tried to do a system restore and I received a message that it could not be restored and no action was taken. I'm at a loss now. any idea what I need to do here?

Normally, I'd suggest trying a repair reinstall of Windows, but this gets a bit complicated if you've the original XP disk, and have SP2 installed [works better if you have a "slip-streamed" XP-SP2 disk]. . .
And because there's this thread in another forum where a fellow had a problem similiar to yours that a repair install did not permanently fix, and which he believes might be traced to a problem with Adobe Reader 6. [Personally, I've used Adobe 4,5,6 - all the recent versions, with WinXP and had no problems - but see if some brew of the software witches might be toil-and-troubling something, just in case: http://groups.msn.com/WindowsSupport...67383330270009 And here's yet another, with a procedure for re-creating the Fonts key in Current Versions (in the Registry), which worked for that user: http://www.gotapex.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-74522 I think I'd give the "gotapex" forums procedure a try first: it sounds the most promising of the bunch. . . . That worked!...went to http://www.gotapex.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-74522 and checked it out. found out that in regedit, I didn't have the fonts key. created a new fonts key and everything came back after rebooting. Thank you very much!
*************************************************************** Try this (at your own risk, of course )Move all of your fonts out of the font folder into a different folder so that the font folder is blank (um, if it isn't blank already, heh) In the registry, delete the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts Now, recreate the "Fonts" key under CurrentVersion. Reboot. In the Fonts control panel, go to "File", "Install New Font", point to the directory where you moved your fonts and add them all. Reboot. ***************************************************************** |
