WHich OS to use?
A computer with a P3 450mhz, 256mb sdram and 12gb hard driver, is 98 better or xp? the ram might be upgradeable to 512 or at least 384 too.

I'd use Windows 2000 on it.
If it's between 98 and XP only, then XP along with more RAM. . 256 MB should be fine, but 384 MB will be fine for sure. RJ

XP is pretty slow on a 450, no matter how much ram you have. I'd also recommend 2000.

Xp will probably run on it but it would be slow and likely frusterating cuz it's that slow.
I would get 2000 if I were in that situation but it depends if you want the newer one or older that will run a bit faster. 2000 is gonna be a lot stabler than 98 though and wil run good on that comp. |

98 would be quite peppy on it, but, as said, not terribly stable.

I ran Win98SE on a PIII 450MHz with 256MB RAM for several years without too much trouble. Granted, Win98SE isn't anywhere as stable as Win2000 or XP, but the computer did run fairly quickly and was pretty stable. I don't think I would put WinXP on it.

I also ran Win 98SE for several years on a couple of computers. It was a lot more stable than people seem to believe. About 96 percent of the time I could shut down an application that froze and the OS stayed fine. However, I did run pretty standard programs and didn't burn CDs or the like. It was fine for office work, surfing the web, listening to audio off the web, email, etc. And I played DOS games, older Arcade games, and such.

Preferably 2000, but if I had to, I'd put 98SE on there.
