Pissed End Program

Quite often when starting programs, XP just hangs and when I go to alt/ctl/Del it says that the program is not responding. I then have to "end Program" from the task manager. Is there a fix or known problem?

What programs do this?
Do you leave your pc on for days at a time?
Do you have a ton of other programs open at the time?

End Program

I'm not sure exactly which programs, but several, including Internet Explorer. I will start tracknig which programs don't end - thanks for the help.

I don't usually have tons of programs open at once, but I do have several 1 - 3) open.

Yes, I do leave my machine on 24/7 and maybe boot once or twice a week.

What are the system specs? Name brand or home built?

What background programs are you running? Firewall? Antivirus?

Did this problem just start recently? Or has your computer always done this?

Did you install anything new just prior to this problem starting?

I do run McAfee antivirus, and ZoneAlarm firewall.
This is a fairly recent happening, like maybe the past 4 weeks, and I don't relate it to anything new being added to my system, although I'm not 100% on this.

My machine is a Dell, 8 months old, Pent4, WinXP, 1g memory.

Did you upgrade to SP2 yet?

Try disabling the McAfee and then work with the computer. McAfee is known to cause system instability.

And try disabling Zone Alarm just to see if things change when it's off.

It just froze up again after leaving a data base program. It seems that anyghint using Internet Explorer seems to freeze up, and then when I try to close down the machine, IEXPLORE remains running, and I have to alt/del/Ctrl to go into taskmanager to end it.

I would recommend trying to run it without McAfee and see if it improves stability.

McAfee just sent an update yesterday, and now everything seems to be OK.

Thanks everyone for your input.
