Restart Windows 2000 with 640*480 resolution

How can I restart windows 2000 and XP with 640*480 resolution and 256 colors, I need to use an old SVGA monocromatic monitor with this pc, but every time I reboot the pc it sets the resolution to a higher value.

You could try safe mode. Press F8 before you get to the windows loading screen.

In device manager, monitor, properties - driver - update driver, do not search, show all devices, change it to a standard VGA 640x480 monitor. Switch out the monitor during the reboot so it doesn't redetect a plug and play monitor and set it all back to 800x600 again.

Send a message via Yahoo to Dodge7
Just use a newer monitor to set the output at standard VGA 640 x 480 60 Hz. Then you should be able to swap out to the old SVGA monitor. From then on it should always boot at standard VGA.
