Problem naming Folders in Win98SE

I wonder if someone can help. I am having naming issues with folders. Let me give you an example to illustrate.

I was trying to create a new folder called 'Call of Duty Patch v1.4'.
I created the folder and named it but the title box underneath the folder showed
'Call of Duty Patch v1'.
I view windows pages in Web page format so that the folder address is listed on the side but the correct name is displayed their (and similarly in the address bar it is correct also).

If I try to rename the folder by adding the '.4' the label under the folder is now correct but in the address bar, etc, I now see 'Call of Duty Patch v1.4.4'

This only seems to happen with Folder not Files

Can anyone give me a clue as to how to resolve my problem

Cheers

I don't have a Win9x machine nearby at the moment, but it's probably that the period isn't considered a valid character for a Folder name. I took a quick look (since my memory didn't help me) over at the MSDN Library, and they say to check in that section of your version of Win9x's "Help" for the article "To change the name of a file or folder". It probably lists the valid and invalid characters.

Windows 2000/XP offer much more flexibility in folder and file names.
. . . Gary

[the whole thing might be due to the 8.3 DOS name links created in Win9x for the longer filenames http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;142982]

I noticed certian versions of Windows let you use a period and certian ones don't. I could boot into 98.... but from memory it seems to me that it was particluar about periods.... but later versions didn't matter.

P.S. I think it was with a later service pack that I was able to use periods in 98SE you might try getting the latest 98 add ons from Microsoft, that might allow you to use a period.

P.S.S I noticed your in London, how's the weather and such?

Thanks for your replies guys. This is something that has only just started to happen. I have never had issues with using the 'period' character with 98se.

I think the easiest thing is to just do a reinstall it will be easier than to spend days on end looking for which registry key(s) to edit.

Dodge7, the weather here in London is overcast (has been for last few days) mild about 13C (approx 60f). The news channels here are all glued on the U.S Pres election and by all accounts looks like you are keeping Bush.

Cheers

Yep, Kerry just gave his concession speech. We're glad we don't have a long fight like last time. It was an interesting election, we really weren't sure who would win. In years past, we almost always knew the winner before the election, even.

I live in Phx, AZ a little warmer here 74 F and sunny. Acutally, we're running cold it should be around 80 F this time of year.
