winxp 16bit

i dunno how this started but a file AUTOEXEC.NT is missing from C:\windows\system32.

i hav reinstalled windows but still no luck so my computer is running is 16bit mode, thankz 4 ur help in advance

You will want to run full-system "thorough" antivirus and antispyware scans, just to make sure that the files haven't gone missing due to a malware infection. You can also double-check with an online scanner [HouseCall is pretty good http://housecall.trendmicro.com -- there are many others]

An article in the MS Knowledge Base has some repairs you can try. I pasted the link below. Mostly it involves getting your trusty Windows CD out and putting the files back where they belong. You'll probably want to print those instructions before trying them: they are pretty detailed, and the commands need to be entered exactly.

i had this problem too a couple of months ago. it turned out that my AUTOEXEC.NT file was called AUTOEXEC.NT.TXT so it deleted itself every boot. when i found out about this all i did was remove the .TXT part and it was fine. if you are wondering how i got it back after each boot i have two hard drives each with a copy of xp.

zombie - double extensions can be a sign of virus infection. . . you might want to double-check your local antivirus with an online scan like Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com
