Running ressource intense programs as SHELL
I am currently experimenting with using ressource intensive programs as Shell (instead of Explorer.exe or Cmd.exe/Command.com) to maximize performance. Things sometimes go well, but I often get error messages telling me the program couldn't load his own configuration files. Is there a way of loading program-specific configuration files without a shell, and allow the program to access these configuration files? Thanks.

I left some links for cmd.exe resources over in your other thread: you might find some helpful info in those webpages.
I don't think you'll see a huge difference in performance in XP whether running from cmd.exe or from the regular GUI. You could certainly test it out & report your findings. . . . Gary [My intitial feeling is that cmd.exe will be a bit too limiting for what you're trying to do.] Last edited by GaryRouth; 11-04-2004 at 01:59 AM. |

XP, being a true 32 bit operating system, does not have the resource issues that 3.x/9x/ME had. There are no longer OS "heaps", it uses physical ram and the pagefile instead.

[. . . just in case I wasn't very clear in my reply, the cmd.exe "resources" I was referring to are the articles on the linked webpages with information about cmd.exe in XP. Sorry if I was confusing! . . . ]
... and glc's observation about XP resource usage is the same reason I was thinking that using cmd.exe for "resource intensive" programs doesn't seem like an idea that makes much sense. Last edited by GaryRouth; 11-05-2004 at 02:21 AM. |
