I believe it is in the registry somewhere. Sorry, but I don't know where.

I used the program: AIDA32 to find it.

UPDATE!

How to find Product ID in Registry (98 & ME)

First Click on Start/Run/ and type "REGEDIT" now do the following to find the present Product Key for windows 98 and ME installation.

This is useful if you lost you Certificate of Authenticity, but already have windows on your system.

FOR WINDOWS ME & 98

Click on

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

then

SOFTWARE

then

MICROSOFT

then

WINDOWS

then

CURRENT VERSION (make sure this is highlighted)

the Product ID will be listed beside product key

You *Might* be able to buy one from Microsoft, but I don't know if they would support 98 anymore.

He'll have to find the original documents then, that came with the computer (or with the Windows 98 CD) when he bought it.

Or purchase another license. Win98 is still sold at auction sites (like eBay) - make sure to obtain a copy with a valid Certificate of Authentication if you go that route.

If he has access to any sort of Recovery set that came with the computer, no CD key is necessary for such disks, as they are usually disk images, and have the key in the Registry already.

Send a message via Yahoo to Dodge7
Yeah, you can get a Win 98SE CD legally for $40 or less with a little searching.

I have the same problem with a home AutoCAD disk. I lost the security key. The problem is they discontinued the program [which I just bought]. And of course, this is after I just cleaned the hard drive. I think the thing to do is try to call the companies invovled and hope they'll help.

Explain, please. If it's for the exact same version and type (OEM, retail, upgrade) it will work unless it's a restore disk (Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, etc.).
