Outlook Express
I can receive mail with no problems. When trying to send mail I get this error message. Running XP Home w/SP1a.
{The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Subject 'Coffee Machine', Account: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx', Server: xxxxxxxxxxxx, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relay not permitted', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79} The only information I can find says to I uncheck the box in -Tools-Accounts-Mail-Properties-Advanced that says "This Mail Server Requires A Secure Connection (SSL)". This box is NOT checked. The only other suggestion was to disable any AV software for outgoing mail. That did not work either. I did a fresh install and installed SP2 with it and I still have the problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

That message is usually generated when the email address in the To field is invalid. Usually, it's because there's a comma instead of a period (often hard to see the difference with some fonts).
Try sending an email message to yourself...making sure you type your own address exactly, no typos, in the To field...and see if it will send. If so, then the problem is most likely with a typo in the address you're trying to send to. |

It sounds more to me like you are not using your ISP's SMTP server. Many ISP's these days block use of any SMTP (outgoing) server except their own, no matter whether you are using their e-mail account or a 3rd party account. The block may also be at your 3rd party SMTP server, it doesn't recognize you as an authorized user because your IP is not one of theirs. Another possibility is your SMTP server requires authorization - if you are sure you are using the correct server, try checking the "my server requires authorization" box.
I have this exact issue. I use my own domain for my e-mail (myaccount@domain.com, my incoming POP3 server is pop.domain.com) but I must use Earthlink's SMTP server - smtp.earthlink.net (I have Earthlink DSL) - smtp.domain.com will NOT work. I'd go to your ISP's support site and look for e-mail configuration instructions. |

I still have my old pop3 account in the UK running, for some reason the ISP hasn't closed it yet (whatever not important) But if I receive an email to that account and send a reply I get that exact same message when I forget to change the email "from" address. As glc says

Yes, sometimes they will block it if the "from" address doesn't match. The way around this is to change the default "reply to" address to what you want replies coming to.

I appreciate the replies. I noticed that I neglected to mention that sometimes my mail will go out. I sent several out today with no problems and tonight it started giving me the error again.
