MS WinXP Home Dell Restore Disc

I recently purchased the item in the subject line from www.dumpinggoods.com. I had problems activating it so about a week ago i sent an e mail to there tech support telling them i was having problems. They have yet to get back to me on it. I just went to the site and searched for the product and what do u know? They don't have it anymore. Does anyone find this a little fishy?

Can a Dell Restore Disc, which is i believe what I purchased it says dell on the front and is purple and white, even be used on a non-dell machine?

Probably not! Dells are proprietary systems.

Do you think the site got in trouble for selling the Dell Restore Discs? They've taken them down since I purchased it.

They shouldn't be selling Dell restore discs. Restore discs come with the PC when you buy it.

But, Dell restore discs can work on computers that are not Dell.

It should, but Microsoft might have a problem, since it is a restore disc from Dell.

Lol, yea thats understandable. I guess i learned my lesson tho, I'm never going to buy from an obsure website like that again. Should i just keep this disc or RMA it back to them? I built this new computer for a friend and he had a budget of 800 dollars. I was looking to cut the price down so i could make it pretty fast for him. Thats when i noticed this site. It saved me about 20 dollars and seemed to work fine till i got to the activation part. I got an error that was saying i tried to enter the product key to many times and to either call microsoft or enter the correct product key. I've entered it about 10 or 20 times correctly and still it wouldn't work. Could i do a fresh install and re-try the product key?

You should try to return it back to them, and buy an OEM disc from Newegg. Either Pro or Home.

Get XP Home from Newegg. It is only $20 more than the one from EBay, and you can trust it.

You can try and reinstall it, but personnally I would return it.

Actually the one from newegg is only 5 dollars more than the one from ebay after S&H. What kind of hardware would i have to purchase with the one from newegg?

I'm not sure if they would count a fan as internal hardware. Get a FDD for $10 or something like that.

Freebie.

It's my impression that a Dell restore disk will not install on a non-Dell computer as it is keyed to a Dell bios. However, the error message YOU got indicates that you bought a copy of a pirated regular CD. I'd report the vendor to Microsoft.

Oh and another question GLC, i have the customers old hard drive. It has windows xp home installed on it already. The only problem is that it's really cluttered and junked up with spyware and a virus or two. I ran spybot and ad-aware and got rid of most of the spyware. I also ran AVG and got rid of most of the viruses except one which i could not get rid of. I'm at school right now so i don't know what the viruses name was. is there anyway to just delete everything except for the files needed for the OS?

If you have the disc you should just reinstall it. But if you don't you might be able to do a system restore.

Also, just try editing your posts.

Before you do that, do you have the Winodws CD. It would be easier just to do a fresh install instead.
