I have an old dell ispirion laptop, Pentium I 233 mhz, with windows 98. I have the full version of 98 SE (not the upgrade). Can I use this to upgrade to Windows SE without wiping my hard drive and reinstalling from scratch.?

Yes. You cannot upgrade from within Windows, you have to boot to DOS and rename win.com to win.old, then you can use the full as an upgrade by booting with the CD or a startup disk like you would on a blank drive. Make sure you install to c:\windows and it will upgrade very nicely right over the top of your 98FE.
Incidentally, if you loaded it up to 128mb ram, it will run Win2000 quite well. |

Well, I figured out how to boot to DOS but renaming win.com to win.old is still beyond me.

Here's a step-by-step from our Tips & Tricks section. See if that helps. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846
. . . Gary [it's the same procedure glc mentions, with a few more details thrown in] |
