No recovery console

i have no winnit32.exe folder /program on my installation CD ROM, which is an OEM edition.

So I am unable to use recovery console. (should i ever need to and I'm sure the need will arise one day).

Is there any other way to install recovery console onto my system???

thanks

You can also get to a recovery console by using a bootdisk.

I can also get to recovery using a boot disk? What bootdisk might this be? And where do I get this bootdisk?

I have been to this article myself and if you had read it before posting it you'd see it merely talks about using or installing recovery console. It has no mention of the OEM version of xp pro being remiss of this option nor how to get recovery console.

And it is interesting how ALL THE COMPUTER SALESPEOPLE in the shops told me there is no difference between OEM and the packaged and more expensive XP OS. This simply isnt true. Firstly there is no recovery console. You cannot do a update install /or repair install, and many other aspects i have researched with OEM including the many restrictions relating to mobo and bios lockdowns.

I think its time these computer shops starting coming clean on OEM. What they are telling people here in australia is in fact very misleading. They all claimed to me that the only difference was the manual was not included.

Not sure about the missing files on the oem versions of XP. I tried a couple of my discs and confirmed what you have said. However, you can boot from the XP cd and accesss the Recovery Console that way. You just can't follow the MS KB article to install the RC as a boot option. Is it important to you to have the RC as a boot option or is merely having access to the RC from the CD sufficient?

i cant use the CD ROM to get to the recovery console in any way at all because the RC is simply NOT THERE.

Im not sure what youre getting at in the second question but I want RC if i happen to need it.

I've seen at microsoft technet there are 6 floppy disks for the xp OS and I will investigate if i can this to download a copy of the RC.

this is the file path we should be looking for....but on OEM XP it isnt there

d:\i386\winnt32.exe/cdcons

This is the file path on the full version, not the OEM

If you set your bios boot order to the CD drive before the hdd, you can boot to the XP cd and it WILL give you the "repair using the Recovery Console" as the first option. Most folks use the second repair feature that comes under the install new os area. Pressing "R" at the first repair option will take you to the RC. It's gotta be on the CD, just not in the file location we're looking for.

Proprietary restore CD's may not have the console option. However, just to use the console, you can boot with any standard XP cd without worrying about licensing, etc.

down load the setup files for the floppy boot disks for xp from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en for xp home or http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en for xp pro make the 6 floppy disks and you then have the recovery console its on the floppy disks
