Will it run in DOS? Restart the computer in DOS mode and type SCANDISK at the C prompt.

Start - shut down - restart computer in DOS mode.
Alternatively - start tapping F8 when it's booting up to get the boot menu (same way you do it to boot to safe mode) but choose "command prompt only" instead of safe mode. |

Fragmentation has no affect on Scandisk.
Plus, you want to be running Scandisk before you run defrag, not afterwards. |

You might want to try running Scandisk and Defrag from Safe Mode next time this happens.
