No drive attached to fast track controller
I posted earlier this eve about getting the Must reactivate XP because of substantial system changes.
Well I also now have a new error popping up at boot, I get this message. " No drive attached to fast track controller, the bios is not installed" When I check Device manager, I note that SCSI and Raid controller has a sub item that says "Win XP Promise sata 378 (tm) IDE controller has an exclamation point. When I click properties, I see "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I never noticed this SCSI and Raid controller item before tonight I'm not using a raid set up, I have 2 HDDs on IDE1, and I have a DVD/CD burner and DVD/CD player on IDE2. I also have a USB external drive. Is this a motherboard error or something else? I have a OS clone on the external drive as a back up. I tried using the win XP CD and I also tried the Asus motherboard set up CD, but the hardware prog keeps asking for the hardware CD. any help will be greatly appreciated |

You need to turn the controller off in the bios if you don't have anything connected to it. It sounds like your bios may have reset itself, possibly due to a weak motherboard battery (or did you perhaps use the clear cmos jumper?).

No sir I don't have anything attached. One thing I didn't point out in the prior post, is that after I reactivated XP, I D/L'd 2 security updates (non sp2) from the widows update site. After rebooting, (didn't sit and watch the loading sequence to desktop) I roamed the net for a while and shut down. Later in the evening, as I booted up, I noticed the message.
I suppose it might be the battery, although everything directly connected to the board, cpu, agp, ram almost everything in the case is just over a year old build date 8/6/03. I'll check out the setup and see what's up there, thanks for the info! PS, I didn't mess with the jumpers either. |

Thanks glc that solved the prob. I tend to stay away from set-up once I got it running out of the MB manual, I'm sure no one else in the house would know how to get into set-up let alone mess around in there. So, I wonder what could have caused it to happen. I'm sure it couldn't be a voltage spike, I have the APC XS1000 providing protection and have the voltage settings trimmed down from the defaults. If it is the cmos batt, I should expect odd behavior to keep cropping up.

If the battery is going bad, what you will see is the computer clock showing incorrect time or losing time.

Then it can't be the battery, the time is on track with the National Weather Channel.
