ENUM and Over the Top Install Problem
Using Win98 SE
I forgot to remove the ENUM file when I changed MOBs, so after putting in the new board I booted to Safe Mode and removed ENUM. I expected the machine to search for new hardware, then I would load the new MOB disk. BUT, when it restarted, I got the message “ Windows Expanded Memory Diver EMM 386 not installed- unable to set page frame base address " Then it loaded EMM 386 , but stopped again saying “ cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Window application . The Windows Registry or System.ini file refers to this device file but the device file no longer exists. “ Then it says to try uninstalling the program or re installing with the disk. C:\program~1\Symantec\Symantec\Symevnt.386. Then same message for: SYMTDI.vxd C:\program~1\Norton~2\Norton~2\NAVAP.vxd I went back into Safe Mode and uninstalled Norton System Works, and searched for Norton files and Symantec file and removed them. I removed the Registry files associated with Symantec and rebooted. Same result. I decided to do an over the top install of Win 98 to fix it , but when it rebooted it restored the Registry to an earlier time, and the ENUM drivers and registry entries were all back. I tried again, same result. I can only get into Safe Mode and can not even re install Norton to humor the system. Question: how can I do an over the top install or fix this problem without doing a clean install and losing my neighbor’s data and programs ?? |

Hi Roy
See if anything in the Symantec manual removal tips might help (once it's really gone, you might be able to reinstall it). Did your neighbor have GoBack active? That one has a trickier manual uninstall than most (and it alters the mbr, too). There's a link to the GoBack manual removal on this removal tips page, along with tips for overall removal, and component-by-component removal http://service1.symantec.com/support...rc=bar_sch_nam Once you get past the symevnt errors, it seems like you should have a decent chance of straightening out the hardware detection. Probably want to try things without SystemWorks first, then reinstall it if your neighbor likes it. . . . Gary |

Thanks for the link, Gary. I removed according to the document. I downloaded the file that removes the Symantec registry entries. He did not have GoBack installed.
GLC- I used sysedit, and I found nothing that looked like Symantec or Norton, etc. After removing the registry entries with their download, it did remove some of the problems, but I still ended up with two items: 1. EMM.386 not installed, unable to set page frame base address 2. C:\Progra~1\Norton~2\Norton~2\NAVAP.vxd I did an over the top install, hoping it would work, but when it ran Windows for the first time, it said it found some problems with the registry, and it restored again. I can not re install Norton without getting into Windows, and I have no idea what the entry means that EMM.386 is not installed. The file is in Windows, but perhaps the Norton program installs it for their program. GLC- what would the entry look like that I was looking for using sysedit? Perhaps I missed something. Anything else I can try to get Windows to load properly? Thanks |

Hi again
If the system can boot into Safe Mode, try using msconfig to inspect the startup files. If you can find the NAVAP.vxd in there, you should be able to manually edit it out (from within msconfig, by selecting the Edit button in the relevant startup file). I think glc's reply might mean it's likely in the system.ini file. If you can't get to msconfig, try SysEdit again. Here's an old article with the default system.ini values listed in it: you can use it to help compare your neighbor's current file with the defaults. http://printers.necsam.com/public/pr...ft/Q140441.htm If the new board has onboard sound, you'll of course have to disable it in the bios - if you're planning on re-using an add-in PCI sound card from the previous install. If it's the same sound card as before, try reinstalling those sound card drivers in Safe Mode & see if that takes care of the EMM.386 messages. I believe it's just legacy memory management for older games. When needed, there are usually lines in the config.sys file that read something like: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS The whole scenario is covered a little in the MSKB article http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;q75592 If you can't get into Safe Mode to reinstall the sound drivers, you could try editing the config.sys file. You'd either edit to include the memory manager lines [which have to be in a certain order, that's all in the EMM.386 MSKB article (the 2nd link above)] --- or edit to REM out any lines for the DOS memory managers & DOS drivers --->and let a later reinstall of the sound drivers take care of things. See if that does it. . . . Gary |

Well , Gary or GLC, I tried everything and no fix. I had cloned the drive from a 6 gig to a 30 gig, and saved the 6 gig in case of emergency. so I recloned the 6 gig back again. The machine booted ok with the old MOB. It was a slot 1 Asus that used a video card and a sound card. The new MOB is an Asus A7n266-VM that has on board video and sound. After the clone I am back where it started. When I boot after the install, these are the messages:
" EMM386 not installed-unable to set page frame base address." when I press ok- " Expanded memory services unable to load upper memory - blocks available 31 kb upper memory starting address CDOO H EMM386 active C:\set blaster=A229 17 D1 H5 P370 T6 C:\set CTSYN=C\Windows C:>C:\Progra~1\Creative\SBLive\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.com(unsure of com) - then the Windows logo then a box labeled " NAV auto protect" that says: " the configuration files were not found- using default configuration" then another box labeled " NAV auto protect " that says " unable to initialize the exclusive database " then reboots. That is why I uninstalled NSW the first time, thinking it would fix it. I have changed MOBs before, but this is the first time the machine has not booted afterwards. How can I untangle this? Roy |

[I confess I'm losing track a little of the drives] . . . that said, if you can reach Safe Mode at all, it seems like you should be able to remove 1) the Norton & it's entries 2) the video and sound drivers, 3) the offending lines for NAV and SoundBlaster in the startup files, and 4) the Enum key. More or less in that order.
Try again & see it that order of removal works? . . . Gary |

Over the top non distructive install !
This is a combo of replies to a post in another forum on doing a reinstall >
do a nondistuctive windows m.e reinstall with out loseing data goto safe mode and than c:windows\options\cabs\setup.exe double click setup and windows will start reinstalling on top of its self To reinstall WinMe goto Start/Run/ then browse to Windows/Options/Cabs/Setup.exe and run the setup program and sit back for a little while. It would also be a good idea to scandisk and defrag, before and after. If you do not already have RegClean from MS, go to their website and download it ... very helpful with cleanup after install. Hope this helps. Another post 01/02/03 If you want to reinstall windows even though you dont have the CD then do as follows. C:/WINDOWS/OPTIONS/INSTALL/SETUP.exe hope it helps Another way to reinstall me > Hello! Dan, Yes, I have found a solution! It seems complicated, but if you follow, step-by-step you'll do fine. I have had six responses to my question all saying the same thing, "I have the same problem and I can't find a solution." So, I called Microsoft and here is what we did. Do not type any of the quotation marks!! Watch carefully for spaces!! Watch for the direction of the back and forward slashes!! 1. Start WindowsME to the Emergency Boot Disk or Startup Disk, then click "with cd-rom support". 2. This was a stupid step that is unnecessary, it just confused the issue! 3. Type "C:" to change the drive and press enter. 4.Type "MD oldroot" then press enter. 5.Type"Attrib -r -h -s C:\*.*" then press enter. 6. Type "Attrib -h _restore" then press enter. 7. Type "Move C:\*.* C:\Oldroot" then press enter. 8. Type "Ren _Restore Oldrest" then press enter. 9. Type "Ren progra~1 oldprog" then press enter. 10. Type "Ren windows oldwin" then press enter. 11. Type "C:\oldwin\options\install>setup /ie /is /iv" then press enter. 12. When you are prompted to enter a folder to install windows in, click "Other Directory". 13. Type "C:\windows" for the folder that you want to install windows in. 14. Remove the Emergency Boot Disk from the floppy drive. The files should copy fine now and you haven't lost any of your data, they are in the oldprog or oldwin folders that now exists in your new current C:\ drive! I hope this helps. I was very frustrated with this problem so I hope I can save you some sanity!! Dawn dawnlynn@digital.net Navigate to c:\windows\options\install and look for SETUP.EXE and double click on it to run the setup program again. If you can't actually find that in Windows through Explorer, then boot with your ME startup disk and get to an A:\ > prompt and type: cd c:\windows\options\install Hit Enter, now type: setup or setup.exe and hit enter again. Seems like I've been cutting and pasting these instructions a lot lately, so I thought I'd post them down here [now I only have to cut & paste the link!] Sometimes an over-the-top reinstallation of Windows can be a timesaver. On most recent computers the whole procedure can take as little as 30 or 40 minutes. A nice feature of this procedure is that your programs do not have to be reinstalled, and your data is not lost. You likely will need to visit Windows Update when finished, though, to download and reinstall some of the Security Updates. *Note* - while doing all this, you'll need to temporarily disable the Bios virus protection that is usually running on most modern motherboards. Enter Bios Setup by pressing the key displayed during startup, and somewhere on the first or second menu should be an item to Enable or Disable Bios Virus Protection (might be called BiosShield, or VirusGuard, or whatnot) ---> then, when you're finished with your uninstalls & reinstalls, re-Enable the Bios protection feature. ____________________________ Over The Top ReInstall: Boot with a bootable floppy or CD - "with CD-rom support", and from DOS rename the win.com file to win.bak. Like this C: cd \Windows rename win.com win.bak Then switch to the drive letter of your CD drive [often drive D:] -->OR switch to C:\Windows\Options\Cabs (if you're lucky enough to have the cabs copied onto your hard drive there), and start setup (by simply type the command: setup) When Windows asks if you want to use the directory C:\Windows.000, instead choose "Other" and type in C:\Windows [without the .000 following]. You'll need your CD-key handy. If you've lost your CD-key: before you start the reinstall look for it by starting regedit from the Start/Run box, then navigate to the key (you navigate in regedit like you do in Windows Explorer) HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion . . . if you click on "Current Version", you should see a list of keys and values in the box displaying on your right. One of these will read "ProductKey" and will consist of 5 sets of 5 alphanumeric characters = your CD key. Be careful when in regedit just to look at things and not make accidental changes. _________________ If you forgot to rename the Windows.000 directory, don't worry, Hal has a tip posted in this same Tips & Tricks board that can fix that for you. His thread also explains how to use a procedure very similiar to this 'over-the-top' for upgrading within the Win9x series. His thread also explains how to use a procedure very similiar to this 'over-the-top' for upgrading within the Win9x series. Should I have mistyped How to fix the screwup If you've ever done a Win98 to Win98SE or Win9x to WinME upgrade, and forgot to change the installation directory back to C:\WINDOWS from C:\WINDOWS.000 and now have what appears to be a clean installation, don't panic, here's how to reverse it. I'll give upgrade instructions at the end of this as well. First, check, do you have a directory C:\WINDOWS.000, if so, you forgot to rename the installation directory. Here's what you need to do. 1) Boot from the Win98 CD to a command prompt with CD support. 2) Type in the following when you get to a command prompt C: PATH=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND ATTRIB -H -S -R MSDOS.SYS EDIT MSDOS.SYS Anywhere in that file that you see ".000" remove the ".000" ALT-F X and save the file. If you renamed the WIN.COM file, the following commands are the best to do; CD WINDOWS RENAME WIN.XXX WIN.COM Where WIN.XXX is whatever you originally renamed the file. If you deleted the WIN.COM file, run the following instead; CD WINDOWS.000 COPY WIN.COM C:\WINDOWS Now reboot your computer. It will boot from the original Windows installation. When it is finally done, go into Explorer and delete the C:\WINDOWS.000 directory to clean everything up. You are now back at your original Windows installation. If you want to try to do the upgrade again, DO NOT forget to rename the installation directory during the install from C:\WINDOWS.000 to C:\WINDOWS If everything I typed doesn't apply to you, you're probably stuck formatting and reloading from scratch unless you want to figure out what's causing the instabilities. How to upgrade your Windows9x to a newer version of Windows9x with the full installation CD Boot from your Windows98/98SE/ME CD to a command prompt with CD support. Run the following commands assuming your CD-Rom is D:\. If not, sub in the correct drive letter; C: CD WINDOWS RENAME WIN.COM WIN.XXX D: SETUP Now, when you are prompted for an installation directory, it's going to be C:\WINDOWS.000 by default. Select Other Directory and change it back to C:\WINDOWS and continue with the installation. When all is done, your system will be upgraded with all programs, shortcuts, themes, settings, etc, intact. If you screw up and forget to rename the directory, go to the top of this explanation Hope one of these ways works for ya ! Good Luck Nick |

Run SYSEDIT - and copy/paste your config.sys and autoexec.bat, please. You have a problem with your config or you have faulty memory. Might want to test your ram - www.memtest86.com .
Is the SB Live installed in the new system or are you using the onboard sound? If you are using the Live, did you disable the onboard sound in the bios? If you are using the onboard, did you uninstall all Creative software and drivers in add/remove programs? Last edited by glc; 11-14-2004 at 12:52 PM. |

GLC_ I checked the memory- it was okay. Then I started over:
( I hope this is not too long) From a clean clone copy, it would only boot into Safe Mode ; I used add/remove to uninstall all NSW and Ghost. I tried to remove ATI Display Driver, but it would not uninstall-said rundle32 caused an invalid page fault at ATIiiexx.dll . I removed all Creative items. Next used msconfig to uncheck the boxes for Norton/Symantec and ATI in Startup. In msconfig,: configsys contains 2 items: DEVICE-C:\Windows\himem.sys DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.exe Both have checks in the boxes Autoexec.bat Set Blaster-A22017D1 H5 P330 T6 Set CTSSYN-C:\windows C:\Progra~1\Creative\SBLive\DOSDRV\SBEinit.com Path=%path%;”C:\Program Files\FTS” Set Path=%Path%;C:\Progra~1\Networ~1\PGP ( I removed the checks from the boxes) using sysedit, I looked at everything, but the only thing I saw that looked pertinent was in SYS.INI – the line was: “display driver All in Wonder 128 “ I put a REM in front of it. After this when boot, it caused Windows protection error and rebooted. The message was: EMM386 not installed-unable to set page frame base address." when I press ok- " Expanded memory services unable to load upper memory - blocks available 31 kb upper memory starting address CDOO H-- GLC, you wanted the config.sys and autoexec.bat copied. Below I copied all of the SYSEDIT I could- all but sys.ini- it would not copy. Note: When I removed the old board, I removed the PCI Sound Blaster card, and the AGP Pro video card. I will use the onboard items on the A7n266 VM-AA Thank you. ******* sysedit info ******** @ECHO OFF rem rem *** DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! *** rem rem This file was created by the System Configuration Utility as rem a placeholder for your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Hi again
Seems like the DOS memory manager and general driver mayhem keeps tripping things up. What about trying the removal from Safe Mode again (this is with the new motherboard in place) - and make sure not to reboot until all the removal steps have taken place. Try the manual removal from Symantec, then a manual removal for ATi [pam123 has a thread somewhere here with the detailed Radeon series removal instructions from ATi], then a manual removal of the SoundBlaster, try things with a completely blank autoexec.bat and config.sys, and from the MSKB article = use the generic system.ini as an example to remove any references to 3rd party drivers. Remove as best you can, then run RegClean (this can run from Safe Mode without rebooting), then remove your Enum key - and THEN try a reboot and a hectic round of hardware detection. Make sure any scanners, cameras, printers, or networks are unplugged while you try. You also might want to try things with the onboard sound and networking disabled in the Bios for the first round of detection... then re-enable them & install the drivers later. In fact, it might be a good idea to switch to Standard VGA as a first step before starting this procedure. glc - what do you think, seems like comparing the current system.ini with the generic (without 3rd party drivers) would help identify the problem entries? Seems like the sound drivers are causing the worst headaches. . . . Gary |

Here's what I would do at this point in time. Boot to safe mode, remove ENUM, restart in DOS mode, rename all 4 config files - config.sys, autoexec.bat, system.ini, and win.ini - then do an over the top reinstall of Windows. Do this with NO cards in the machine - then when it's sorted, add any cards back in (modem, etc.).
There is no need for any memory management in config.sys if the SB Live is no longer installed, and most of those autoexec.bat entries are SB-related. I wouldn't be concerned about the path statements. Now, to throw another wrench in here - you are trying to install a NForce-based motherboard. Win98 does not get along with these very well. I'd seriously consider a wipe and a fresh install of Win2K or XP. ME has decent support, but I wouldn't touch ME for other reasons. |

I booted in DOS and renamed config.sys-autoexec.bat-system.ini and win.ini. Then did over the top Win98. When Windows ran for the first time, it reloaded the old registry, etc. The config.sys only item is " setver, but the autoexec.bat it reloaded has the Sound Blaster items in the new one, although without check marks. I will look for Pam123's ATI removal thread. Perhaps that left something in the registry, or perhaps it is a Sound Blaster registry item I can not find.
I will start over. |

Did you remove the ENUM too?

To make certain, I re did it.
- I removed the check marks in the msconfig startup. -I removed all mention of Norton-Symantec in the add/remove -I followed Symantec removal for the other files and used their registry removal download. also searched for Symantec/Norton and removed all files. -I removed Creative from the add/remove and the other files suggested by their site. inf-etc. Searched for allfiles and removed. -Removed ATI from add/remove, seached for files as suggested bytheir site and removed. -removed ENUM -removed registry files as found for Norton-ATI and Creative-Sound Blaster. -Using DOS , renamed config.sys-autoexec.bat- win.ini-sytem.ini -Did an over the top Win 98 SE install -When Windows ran for the first time, it put back the registry, ENUN, etc, and refused to boot. I appreciate your help, and I do not know why it does this. I am about to tell my neighbor I will put back the old MOB or only do the new MOB if he allows a clean install.. and suggest he spring for XP. He did not want a clean install because he no longer has the program disks for some programs. It belongs to his son in Phoenix, and we were using the fathers MOB as I replaced his with one that would handle the XP Barton 2600, so he was upgrading his son's. I think that is my plan, unless you have any other ideas to enable Over the top install. Roy Last edited by ROYP123; 11-16-2004 at 02:18 PM. |

As I said, 98 on a Nforce can be problematic.

Close to torture, seems like.
If you really want to complete your pain [basically throwing the last straw on your neighbor's keep-the-current-programs hopes], you could try giving that setup what it wants = start by disabling the onboard video, sound, and lan on the new motherboard, and using the older video card and SoundBlaster. Leave Norton and the SoundBlaster drivers in - at least at first (reinstall them if necessary), and remove the Enum key & try either an over-the-top from there, or a wild hardware detection ride. It might come out with original programs intact with the original sound and video. --> Then you could chance removing them one at a time & trying the onboard. The nForce2 boards are a little kinder to Win98se than that original nForce-220 that you're working with. One of the stumbling blocks is often the sound - on one board I seem to remember a patch was necessary to get decent sound in Win98 (I believe I found the patch at the mobo's website). I imagine the SoundBlaster might be fine to leave in, it certainly won't be any worse than the onboard. And you might avoid a bunch of problems by using it. Other than trying that method, at least your neighbor qualifies for the $80 upgrade version of XP Home. If the son happens to be a full-time college student, he might qualify for the $90 academic version of XP Pro. It partly depends on your pain theshold ![]() . . . Gary |
