Hello and welcome to PC Mech,

well, a clean install is the best way, but if you want an upgrade, you just need to run setup from within Windows. Don't boot from the CD, just boot into your Windows 98SE and insert the Windows 2000 CD, and it should start automatically. If not, start setup yourself, and then your Windows 98 will be upgraded.

Make SURE you read the upgrade report before you go ahead with the upgrade. There will be software that's not compatible and must be uninstalled FIRST, and other software that needs to be uninstalled and then reinstalled after the upgrade is complete. The report will also tell you what hardware devices will need new drivers so you can have them ready to go. After reading the report, you can cancel the upgrade and take care of these issues, then start the upgrade over. Before starting the upgrade, you need to clean up the system the best you can - upgrading an unstable trashed out OS will give you an unstable trashed out upgrade.
