How to shutdown XP quick KB shortcut?
i would like to know if there is a shortcut to turn off or shutdown
windows XP/turn off computer. rather than 3 mouse clicks and 4 if there is someone else logged in. any one know of a 1 click or fast multi-key shortcut shutdown method? it would be real nice if it logged everyone off as well. found a neat shortcut to get to welcome screen instantly(to switch account and keep you logged in) from you desktop on the MS website. press windows key and L>straight to welcome screen>pick account. thanks JP

You could make your own shortcut:
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00 |

thanks that works thru command prompt but i cant seem to find how to put a shortcut on the desktop.would you explain futher?
i tried browsing the program in system 32 and then creating a shortcut but it wouldnt trigger an actual shutdown from that.it ran the command or shutdown.exe but didnt shutdown. Also something strange happened and it wanted me to run the easy cd creator CD!?before it would transfer the shortcut. if i can i'd like to add a decent icon to the shortcut as well, maybe an exclamation mark or something. With XP you have the option of just pressing the power button on the case, press it once and it will shut down the PC.

Just don't enable (or use) this if you have little people who like to push buttons.

well that is excellent, i now have a shutdown button on the desktop that does exactly what i want.
even shutdowns although other users are logged in. i have used the actual power button to shut down before, but this is better with the icon and even has the power button icon as well. Many thanks for the advice little ghoti, whatsthis, panama and dougL I am now gonna try this on a windows 98 machine as the power button shutdown just causes a scandisk pain. I might post this in tips and tricks (without taking the credit)as this is an excellent shortcut and will end up on all my friends machines as well eventually. Fantastic

On a 9x system you will need a different shortcut:
C:\windows\rundll32.exe user,exitwindows |
