Reformatting Intervals

hey all, i just wanted to share something i do and get your opinoin on it. usually what i do is reformat once every 2-3 months (mostly 3 months). i find that by this time i have problems with an overflow of programs and stuff like that. by reformatting in this interval my computer just seems to run smoothly. sort of like a spring cleaning. i was just wondering how often you guys reformat or if you really just do it out of necessity.

I defrag a lot but I never format unless it's a new drive. Format doesn't really do that much for you as after a format and fresh install, you still have to defrag.

i've been running Xp Home for about 2 years with no problems. Key is to keep up on all the basic maintenance (run anti virus, spyware, defrag, empty needless files like temp., Etc, etc.....

right, there is no real benifit to formatting and reinstalling everything, except a lot of wasted time for nothing,
if you was to do standard matainance to your system and watch what you install, and are carefull of what web-sights you go to, and don't open any e-mail that is from someone you never heard of, you will have no problems.

you did not say which O/S you were useing.
w2k and xp are the two most stable systems MS has made yet.

I have not reformated this PC yet, but i plan to in a month or two, and it will have been about a year. That said, it doesn't really need it at all, i would just like to "start over". I defrag whenever my PC is idle (screensaver mode with Diskeeper).

mike

p.s. i have XP home

Historically, I've reformatted this system about every 3 years - to do an OS upgrade. This load of Win2K is about 3 years old and it's not gonna be reformatted till I upgrade to whatever - and it won't be XPee. If you take care of your system, you will never have to reformat it.

My laptop is a different story because I abuse the heck out of it - and I don't reformat, I restore an image.

be sure to remember to do all the updates and service packs you may need,
and then you may have to call microsoft for a activation code too, maybe not but don't be surprised if you do,
and I would still recommend that you do not do that,
because you can always do a restore point to a earler date which would be the same thing.

yeah, it is a waste of time now that i think about it (took me maybe 2 hours to get it all right now). i thought i had screwed up some installing avg 7.0 over 6.0 and so on. from now on i'm just going to do maintenance. after installing all the new updates on windows, i noticed that everest doesn't say i have service pack 2 even though i dled all the new security updates. i guess i'm not going to worry about it since everything is going well.
thanks for all the input!

avg7 removes ver 6 when it installs, so there is no problem there at all.
