Is this right?

I just timed my new comp. with xp home and it takes 4min and 30 sec. to shut down. It takes 2min alone just to get to the window to chose shut down or restart. My older comp. with 98se only takes 21 sec, to shut down. Is this normal with xp? Thanks

I dont know exactly what is is, but on my xp machine i found that when norton anti-virus was installed it would take several minutes to shut down, some sort of scan I would presume, if you have norton that could be it.

No it is not normal...my XP takes less than 20seconds i'd say to shut down on average. You say your new comp? built by you, or custom built or bought as a package? have you installed much on your machine so far?
sounds like there could be processes running which are having problems shutting down or there is one big process being painful. Press CTRL, ALT & DELETE and see what things are running, that may be causing the problem. See what you can find and let us know.

Yeah that could definately be it, oh those computer hogging virus suites can do it for sure, I stick to a plain and simple virus checker (VET) which has done me proud for years, tried one of those suites once and had many regrets, even had problems uninstalling it. It took control of everything.

No I didn`t build this one but will build one some day. It`s a Gateway. I think what it was is that when I go to shut down I have to click the red button (dah) instead of turn of computer. It seemed to shut down fast if I click the red buttons. Thanks for the help.
P.S. I am new to xp having had my last computer (Gateway) for about 4 1/2 years running 98se.

Older XP installs had some shut down issues that were corrected with subsequent Updates. If the machine in question isn't running Sevice Pack 2, I'd recommend installing it. That will add all the necessary updates at one time.

beyond fixing any glaring security updates and such...
You can use programs like XPSmoker and TuneXP to turn off unnecessary XP features and tweak settings that will make not only start-up ands shut-downs faster but also the overall speed of windows...
