Problematic Scandisk - Windows '98

Having a problem performing a disc scan. Am running Windows '98. When I start scandisk it keeps informing me that the process is extremely slow due to another program writing to the disc.

The re are no programs running at the same time. I have evn tried running it with windows in safe mode, but to no avail as it still returns that message. I tried a ctrl, alt, del but there are no programs running in the background that I can tell (aside from windows explorer).

Has anybody had a similar experience or does anyone know how to rectify it?

Boot into Safe Mode and run Scandisk and Defrag from there.

Restart the computer in DOS mode, at the C prompt, type scandisk.

RVFmal: How long has that installation of Win98 been on that computer without a reformat and reinstall?

A format/reinstall to rectify a Scandisk issue??

Restarts in safe mode can be caused by a virus, an screensaver, or an always on internet connection.

The DOS scandisk may work, but once back in Windows, defrag will more than likely restart.

I would run a full AV scan first to confirm that is not an issue.
I have also seen an MS note (and a poster who actually said it worked), which is to disable the QuickLaunch bar!


BTW: A ctl-alt-del does not show all running programs.

I'm not saying he should reformat and reinstall to fix this issue. I'm just wondering if Win98 has been on his computer for a long time (like since 1998), and if it has been a long time some of his system files may be messed up by now...and a reformat and reinstall may be in order anyway.

Messed up files won't cause restarts.

I ran a Win98 P2 box for almost 7 years without going near a reformat.

If I remember right, Scandisk doesn't run "slow" if another program writes to disk, it starts over, and over, and over... Have you looked in MSCONFIG to see what's running?

I tried to run the scandisc in safe mode, but as Tworails stated, it keeps restarting and then telling me that it would complete it's task much quicker if the program attempting to write to the disc was not running.

I had a look in msconfig and there is nothing running that shouldn't be. Also in safe mode most of the "normal programs" are not run.

I was able to defrag the drive in safe mode with no problems.

Computer still seems sluggish after doing so. Have even run Adaware and Spybot.

you might go online and do a virus scan at trendmicro, maybe they can find something that might be running undetected. I am thinking you got a bug in there.

Well, If your computer is automatically restarting ,then their must be something wrong with your power supply, the voltage fluctuation causes problems in power supply due to which the computer restarts.

please make sure whether you are using a high quality staplizer or converter.

the system is not restarting.
its scandisk thats restarting.

Did the virus scan, but there are none.

Will try running it in DOS this evening after I close off for the day.
