I am not sure if this problem is related to Windows XP, however, I installed Service Pack 2, and when I boot up, the desk top comes up and everything
locks up. So, I push my reset button, and it reboots and everythings works. Also, when I go to My Computer, then to My Documents and Settings, or any other folder, the Search Results window comes up. I don't know if this is a result of installing Service Pack 2 or not, but I unstalled SP2 and reinstalled it, and still the same thing. Can anyone help me? larscot

You might want to browse through the list in the sticky thread at the top of this forum, to see if any of your startup programs are among those that have trouble with SP2.
Did you test whether the lock-up behavior disappeared when you had SP2 uninstalled? If not, try uninstalling SP2 & testing to see if the lockups are gone. If the lockups still persist with SP2 uninstalled, try a System Restore for a date prior to your 1st try with SP2. If that doesn't work, you could try a repair reinstall of XP. Also check in your Event Logs (in Administrative Tools) to see if an error is occuring at the same point as your lockups and unusual search behavior. Probably ought to run your usual antispyware and antivirus scans, too - as always when unexplained behavior pops up on your computers. There are quite a few malware programs out there that affect default search settings. If none of this helps, might have to start looking at possible hardware trouble. . . . Gary |

Did this only happen after you installed SP 2?

Thanks for replying to my thread, however, this problem didn't happen until I upgraded to SP2. I uninstalled SP2 and reinstalled SP2 and I still have the same problem
Thanks for your reply larscot

I checked the list of drivers that you suggested, however, I don't have any of them installed on my computer.
Thanks larscot

Have you tried things while SP2 is uninstalled yet? Or tried a "repair" install?

Hello Gary..
I uninstalled SP2, and there was no changed when uninstalled, but I haven't tried Repair installed. This is a good suggestion, and I am going to get right on it. Thanks Gary.. larscot

Good luck with the repair install.
If you haven't run a few spyware/virus scans yet, make sure to be as thorough as you can. The strange behavior by your Search function might be a symptom of infection or hack. [To follow the malware angle in the most detailed way, check out the sticky thread in the Security forum http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=103171 . . . This thread has many helpful links to removal tools and procedures] . . . Gary |

Hello Gary...
I did the Windows Repair and it seems to have fixed the problem. It looks like it was a registry problem. I want to thank you for your help, advice, and concern. Thank You Again... larscot
