shutdown message
for lack of a better place i picked here. runing xp-pro. sp2 (which i don't think matters) i get a message (very fast then shuts down) saying something like -instructions at 0x00568e1 memory could not read 0x000000 check ok to terminate- i looked all over the internet ,googled it and found no good answers THEN i accidently noticed if i disabled sygate firewall before shutdown it did not appear, this message happens so fast you have to shutdown many times to get it. is there a reason for this? doesn't seem to hurt anything but is annoying.
just thought of something, could it have something to do with the new xp firewall in sp2? i'll try turning that off and see.

raftero:
There does seem to be an issue with Sygate personal firewall and similar (not exactly the same) shutdown errors that do not seem to occur when closing SPF before shutting down. Check http://forums.sygate.com/vb/index.php for their support forum; I did a preliminary search for shutdown errors and got a bunch of them. Check to see if the error is patched with the newest version of SPF. One solution I seem to have noticed with a recurring theme is to clean out your prefetch directory (\Windows\Prefetch); it seems to work well enough till the time comes to clean out the prefetch directory again. At which point the suggestion apparently was to turn off prefetch. If it was my computer, that would an entirely unacceptable solution, because prefetch does wonders in virtually speeding up routinely performed tasks and applications. |

Did you try the bit about cleaning out your prefetch directory?

raftero - are you running both the XP firewall and SyGate? If so, leave the XP firewall off - as long as the SyGate is working OK (outside of the shutdown issue). [I'll assume the SyGate program offers more control and a step-up in protection].
See if you can find an item in your Event Logs & have a link to try for an MS follow-up. I've noticed that some background programs have trouble unloading things at shutdown, and there are some patches for cleaning things out. . . . Gary |

gary turning off the xp firewall didn't eliminate the shutdown thing but i left it off because like you said it really wasn't needed, as for the event log , i have been through it till i'm nearly blind and there is nothing i can find out of the ordinary, just data base engine stopped, clint data base started new instanceetc. the only clitch was a warning-(Windows saved user %1 registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account). a couple of times. i don't really know how to do this. |

Glad to hear the ZoneAlarm 5.5 is faring well - I might give it a go myself with a new system next week [I've been staying with 4.5 till most of the version 5 growing pains were sorted out].
If you still notice that message in your event logs regarding the users registry not getting unloaded at shutdown or log off, there's a little MS utility that will take care of that. It's not a huge problem, more of a housekeeping chore: and the MS article covers most of the common causes http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;837115 [the utility is available for download in the links at the bottom of the MS article] If you don't see that error, or any of the other errors, it sounds like ZoneAlarm has done some nice work in getting along with XP SP2. And that's Good News! . . . Gary |

didn't mention that in my previous post but i had found that utility, it didn't stop the problem with sygate and my shutdown has always been fast but it may have done what it says it will do i haven't checked the log lately. been using the ZoneAlarm 5.5 a couple of days now and it has shown no glitches so far.
