Icons hide in system tray but no button to unhide

i have xp sp2 and the icons in the system tray hide as usual and a balloon pops up telling me that i can use the arrow to unhide them as usual, but the arrow never appears and the icons disappear until i restart. anyone else having this problem, is there some setting i need to change?
thanks!

well, if it happens again, it could probably be due to the "hide inactive icons" feature.

If you right click on teh taskbar and goto properties, you see the check mark for "Hide inactive icons", so can check and uncheck that to make things appear/disappear at will, and also the "Customize" button allows you to decide what you want showing or not.
