Did you want to back up any data before you reinstall?
To reinstall, just boot with your XP CD and follow the on-screen instructions. This will wipe everything from your HDD.

I wouldnt mind backing up some things... but i cant even get into XP to do it... When i try to bring up the task manager there is an error message, explorer doesnt start, and on some of the user names i have not registered my copy of windows yet. I just did a in-place install and it didnt do any good at all.
I will be back tomorrow afternoon |

you can do a repair of windows by booting from the XP cd... (NOT a restore disk)...
you go through like normal, but you choose the repair option (second one, NOT the repair console) it will lose your favorites folder and any email from outlook express.. otherwise it leaves everything else intact |

if you did not have restore points disabled, you could do a restore point back to a date that everything was working good, and not loose any data.

One way to get important files off that hard drive is to remove it from the problem system and install it as a slave drive in another computer. Once the other computer is booted up and running, you can use Windows Explorer to look at the other hard drive and save files to the working system.

no, F8 at boot up is for the safe mode.
system restore is in the control panel click on system, the window that comes up will have a tab in the top left corner called system restore, click on that and you can select a date on the calendar that has a date highlighted which is a restore point, selecting that date and follow the instructions will restore the system to the way it was on that date. |

click on the start button and select the control panel.
if you can't even do that, then you are forced to format the hard drive and reinstall everything, or you could place the hard drive into another computer and copy all the important data you need to a folder, then format the drive. put it back into the orignal computer and reinstall windows, then retrive the data you need from the other system. there is no other way to do it , that I can think of, it too messed up. |

If you can't even get into the OS, I would agree with Bailey and Cricket, and put it in another computer, copy the files over then formt it and reinstall Windows.

How old and what size is the hard drive?
You could always install a new hard drive, install windows on that and then use the old hard drive as a slave. Before you slave the old hard drive make sure your antivirus is up to date on your new installation and then run antivirus scans before you try moving anything about.

Does anyone have an idea of what is going on? This allstarted at the same time, right after i ran SpyBot and removed a bunch of programs. Could that have anything to do with it?

can you start in safe mode? try F8 and go into safe mode. perhaps you can restore it to a time before the spyware removal
